Molded to fit inside spring cone.
Residential and lite commercial doors will use this type of bearing / bushing in the center spring / shaft support. If the door is currently using this type of bearing you can replace it with this or use a steel bearing.
The thought process behind using a nylon center bearing / bushing is that if the shaft is not exactly plumb and level this bushing will wear before the shaft will wear.
Typically, if the shaft is out of alignment, a steel, ball bearing type bearing will wear and eventually start to cut into or otherwise damage the door shaft. A nylon bearing will not harm the shaft while it is deteriorating. However, if a nylon bearing does wear and is left un checked, in time the shaft may start to contact the bearing plate. By nature, the shaft is turning ea. time the door is opened or closed, if the shaft is contacting the center support (bearing plate) eventually the shaft will saw itself in half.
Often neglected, this area of the door should be part of the normal bi annual lubrication program. Simply keeping this are lubricated will prevent a catastrophic failure of the shaft being damaged.
We prefer to use a steel bearing but do not hesitate to use these nylon bearing / bushings as well.
If you are replacing a spring or springs, inspect the bearing or bushing and replace if needed. Lubricate with grease when you have this area exposed for service, normal door lubricant when doing regular scheduled maintenance.
These 1″ nylon bearings / bushings can be used on any 1″ OD pipe, rod, dowel or what have you. They really come in handy when doing custom work on any round 1″ outside diameter item. Used in conjunction with one of the common garage door bearing plates you can make up all sorts of handy hanging, rotating rods and so on, we have these working in a variety of applications in our warehouse.
