Designed to draw nearly flush with the surface being used on. Square shoulder keeps bolt in place and prevents it from spinning. Typically used on end bearing plates on garage doors. Once tightened the head is out of the way of the cable and the cable drum. Also used on larger doors as a track bolt. Good for use when the standard 1/4″ track bolt is not heavy enough.
Carriage bolts are pushed into a hole the same size as the shank and then hammered in the rest of the way, where the square shoulder locks it firmly in place. Used whenever a smooth finish surface is needed so that nothing becomes snagged on the fastener.
